The Audi A4 B6 has diverse headlight HID configurations.
On this model you may find D2S bulbs as easy as D1S bulbs and also different Xenon Ballasts. (Valeo LAD5G 12 pin or Valeo LAD5GL – this is what I seen thus far).
Before you start ordering parts, I would advise you to be sure what is your cars config.
One thing is certain, let’s call it the Golden rule:
” Do not use aftermarket cheap Chinese bulbs! They will damage your ballasts! “
I learned this the hard way and i hope you will trust me on this.
So buy OEM high quality bulbs, we sell them Here.
“If not here is the link to buy the ballasts that you fried”. We have them on hand in our shop :).
You will also need OEM bulbs.
And now that we finished the marketing part of this post let’s see what happened on this A4 B6 with Factory D1S Bulbs and LAD5GL 4 pin ballast.
The client came to us with no low beam.
He told us that he had one bulb that died and he bought a cheap D1S from Ebay. He fitted it(on the corroded side it seams), got no light and changed the bulbs one with the other, suspecting the new bulbs to be broken.
To his surprise, the new bulb worked on the other side, and he was puzzled, not knowing that he has a ballast that lights the bulb.
Many clients tend to consider that the square metal box on the D1S is the ballast.
Good to know: that is the igniter … you still have a ballast that powers it up.
back to our case study: after a few hours of driving the second light went out and he was left with no light.
And now i will tell you what happened: This car is the perfect example to show the 2 most frequent reasons for ballast failure Valeo LAD5G or LAD5GL :
- water corrosion
- low quality bulb replacement
The first problem on this car was the corroded ballast that stopped working.
After that the cheap D1S replacement succeeded in burning out the second Valeo ballast.
What also is interesting on this car is that one of the ballasts seams to have been changed. The corroded one and the non corroded have different components.
This being said enjoy the photos and if you have questions give me a email or text me on WhatsApp.
To get to the Headlight Bulbs or Xenon Ballast you have to remove the headlights.
Please note:
- on the A4 B6 the headlights come off easy
- you will need a long T30 head wrench/screwdriver
- you have to remove the upper 2 screws and loosen the lower 2 screws
This is the corroded ballast and his headlight.
In the following photos you will see the new D1S Osram bulbs and the new Valeo LAD5GL ballast that were fitted.
The final result:
We love bringing light back to headlights and improving your driving experience.
